&lt;p&gt;In March 2013, Matthew Herper at Forbes was among the first mainstream science journalists to flag Cas9 as a potential inflection point in biotechnology. The timing was remarkable: Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier had published their foundational Science paper showing that Cas9 — a bacterial immune system protein — could be reprogrammed to cut DNA at any desired sequence back in June 2012. Then in January 2013, Feng Zhang at the Broad Institute demonstrated that the system worked in human and mouse cells. Herper&amp;rsquo;s piece appeared in the window between those two papers and the technology becoming widely understood.&lt;/p&gt;</description></item></channel></rss>
