&lt;p&gt;By 2013, a few major cancer centers — Memorial Sloan Kettering, MD Anderson, Mayo Clinic — were beginning systematic programs to apply big data methods to oncology. The basic approach: combine genomic sequencing of tumor samples with electronic medical records of treatment protocols and outcomes, then look for patterns between tumor genetic profiles and treatment responses. The hypothesis was that cancer isn&amp;rsquo;t one disease but hundreds, defined by specific mutation patterns, and that matching treatments to molecular profiles rather than tissue of origin would improve outcomes.&lt;/p&gt;</description></item></channel></rss>
